👩‍⚕️ Women’s Clinic – Early Medical Abortion (EMA)

Safe • Private • Medically Supervised

At Linda Women’s Clinic, we offer Early Medical Abortion (EMA) services using approved medication to end a pregnancy safely and effectively in its early stages.

This process involves taking two sets of tablets that work together to bring on an abortion. The procedure is available for pregnancies up to 9 weeks and can be done in one or two clinic visits, depending on your situation and preference.

💊 How the Abortion Pills Work

The abortion tablets use two different medications:

  • Mifepristone – taken first, this tablet blocks the hormone progesterone, which is needed to maintain the pregnancy.

  • Misoprostol – taken later, either inserted into the vagina or placed against the gum (buccally). This medication contains prostaglandins, a hormone that causes the uterus to contract and expel the pregnancy.

Working together, these pills bring about a natural miscarriage process in a safe, medically managed way.

🩺 Treatment Options

Option 1: Two-Visit Medical Abortion

First Visit:

  • You will swallow a tablet (Mifepristone) with water.

  • You will receive your second appointment time.

  • A nurse will explain what to expect and provide a contact number in case of any concerns.

Second Visit (24 to 48 Hours Later):
  • A nurse will review your symptoms since the first visit.

  • You’ll receive pain relief (administered rectally).

  • You will receive the second set of abortion pills (Misoprostol), which can be inserted vaginally by a nurse or buccally by you.

  • Within hours, the abortion process will begin, and you will likely experience bleeding and cramping similar to a heavy period.

Option 2: Single-Visit Abortion (Simultaneous Administration)

For pregnancies 9 weeks and under, we offer a one-visit EMA service:

  • Both medications are taken during a single clinic visit.

  • Mifepristone is taken orally, and four Misoprostol tablets are inserted vaginally.

  • Nurses can administer the vaginal tablets, or you may self-administer if comfortable.

  • You will be monitored before discharge and given guidance for at-home care.

⚠️ Potential Risks & Side Effects

While EMA is very safe, like all medical procedures, it carries some risks:

  • Heavy vaginal bleeding

  • Incomplete abortion

  • Infection

  • Allergic reaction

Common Side Effects:
  • Nausea or vomiting

  • Mild fever or chills

  • Diarrhoea

  • Abdominal cramping

  • Light-headedness or fatigue

What to Expect After Treatment
  • Most abortions occur 4–6 hours after the second medication, but in some cases, it may take up to 7 days.

  • Discomfort levels vary — some women experience strong cramps, others feel mild pain.

  • You can leave the clinic once stable. Rest is advised for the next few hours.

  • Light movement can help reduce discomfort once you’re home.
